Does the Church of God Preach a Modern Gospel?

Written by Alexandria Irwin

“In the last days, perilous times shall come.” II Timothy 2:1

How could Christ possibly have known what we would really face in these end times? He preached and prophesied so long ago. Surely what He said is long outdated. Naturally His gospel has to be adapted to something more modern because of this, or does it?

Unlike some religious sects, we are not stuck in a certain time period. Instead, we must remain aware of society and keep up with its pace to remain relevant. God wants a relevant gospel.

Many churches of today choose to modernize their core values in favor of reaching new and younger members. But while others may bow to the influences of the times- letting their minds and beliefs shift with culture, we will never progress our core beliefs along with the social winds of time.

“So that we are no longer children, carried about by every wind of shifting doctrine, by cunning trickery of men, by the deceitful scheming of people ready to do anything for personal profit.” Eph. 4:14 amp.

Christ’s gospel is one thing that never changes, and we choose to keep that truth as our guide.

A present-day approach is certainly necessary. In recent years we as a church have produced a weekly livestream, broadcasted a weekly radio show and designed a new phone app. We preach a current gospel reaching into the lives of today’s members and addressing the concerns of 2023, but a progressive gospel is not Christ’s gospel.

The true gospel of Jesus Christ is not modern nor is it ancient. It simply is, and it is still effective today. Times may change around it, but it remains true and unchanging no matter how many people believe it or how many faiths support it. If you desire truth- the kind that is not peppered by man’s ideals or tossed about by society’s constant shifts, come to the Church of God. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
