No matter where you are today, there is a growing concern about offending others. Anger and outrage seem to be running rampant throughout our society. Family members refuse to speak to one another because of disagreements. Friendships are ended over differences of opinion. Everyone is demanding to be heard, yet fewer people seem willing to listen.
While many point to political division as our greatest problem, these divisions are symptoms of a much deeper spiritual condition. A healthy society does not collapse simply because of poor policies. It begins to crumble when people no longer recognize a power higher than themselves. Psalm 14:1-3 says: “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: none doeth good, no, not one.”
When man becomes the ultimate standard of truth and morality, society is left without a firm foundation. Throughout history, innovation, free enterprise, personal responsibility, and determination have contributed greatly to prosperity and freedom. Yet material success alone cannot sustain a nation. Without spiritual strength, even the most prosperous society becomes vulnerable to decline.
Spiritual apathy is a growing condition in our culture. Some identify it as atheism, secularism, or humanism, but these are often symptoms of a deeper issue—a gradual departure from God and His truth. Declining church attendance is frequently discussed, but the greater concern is a declining desire to seek God, know His Word, and live according to His will.
Prayer — Communication with our Creator gradually fades and becomes occasional, routine, or mechanical.
Devotions — Many own a Bible, but it has become more of a symbol than a guide for daily living.
Worship — Gathering with God’s people is often viewed as inconvenient or unnecessary.
Serving Others — Serving without recognition or praise is becoming increasingly rare. Genuine service flows from a heart transformed by God’s grace, whether anyone notices our labor or not.
Standing for Christ — Has sin become acceptable simply because it is common? We may be surrounded by it, but we are not called to embrace it.
Matthew 5:14-16 reminds us: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Are you providing light to those around you, or hiding the light God has given you? Modern culture increasingly trains people to consume endlessly while believing in very little beyond themselves. Entertainment often replaces reflection. Outrage replaces wisdom. The approval of strangers on social media often becomes a measure of personal worth. When identity depends upon the opinions of others, confidence becomes fragile and is easily shaken.
Without spiritual grounding, people become more susceptible to fear, resentment, envy, and division. Fear becomes a tool. Resentment becomes currency. Those who feel spiritually empty often seek a sense of belonging in groups or causes that promise identity and purpose. Political affiliations, social movements, or cultural trends can become substitutes for deeper meaning. When this happens, disagreement is no longer viewed as a difference of opinion but as a moral offense.
This should serve as a warning. A spiritually apathetic society requires something greater than human pride and impulse. It requires hearts transformed by the grace of God. So, where is our hope? Our unchanging hope is found in Christ alone. Every day presents an opportunity to serve the Lord. As we walk in obedience, God uses us as vessels for His purpose and glory.
The hope of our nation is not found in politics, prosperity, or public opinion. It is found in transformed lives surrendered to Christ.
